OpenAI recently launched a GPT marketplace, named the GPT Store, within the ChatGPT web client. This store offers various GPT applications, created using OpenAI’s AI models like GPT-4 and DALL-E 3, and is accessible through a new tab in the ChatGPT client. These applications are developed by both OpenAI’s collaborators and the broader developer community. The store categorizes GPTs into different areas such as lifestyle, writing, research, programming, and education, and users can explore popular and trending GPTs on a community leaderboard.

To use the GPT Store, individuals must subscribe to one of OpenAI’s premium plans: ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Enterprise, or the newly introduced ChatGPT Team. Some of the initial GPTs available include a trail recommendation tool from AllTrails, a coding tutorial from Khan Academy, and a content design tool from Canva, all free at the moment.

Creating GPTs doesn’t require programming skills. Developers simply describe the desired functions of their GPT in plain language, and OpenAI’s GPT Builder tool tries to create a chatbot with those capabilities. For instance, a GPT could be trained on a collection of cookbooks to assist with recipe ingredients, or it could learn from a company’s codebases to help developers adhere to coding best practices.

Developers wishing to feature their GPTs in the store must verify their profiles and pass their creations through OpenAI’s new review system, which combines human and automated evaluation, to ensure compliance with the company’s usage terms. Users can also report any GPTs that may violate these terms.

Concerns have been raised regarding OpenAI’s history of using underpaid contractors in developing countries for moderating and enhancing its AI systems. Questions about the review process in the GPT Store, including compensation and mental health support for reviewers, have been posed to the company, but no response was received at the time of writing.

Initially, developers cannot charge for their GPTs, but OpenAI plans to introduce a “GPT builder revenue program” in Q1, allowing U.S. developers to earn based on user engagement. Specific payment criteria will be announced later.

The GPT Store’s launch follows its announcement at OpenAI’s DevDay conference last year and was delayed, likely due to internal leadership changes. The GPTs represent a democratization of generative AI application development, potentially impacting businesses that specialize in creating similar applications. The long-term effects of this development remain to be seen.
